Experience in Academic Institutions:

University of California, San Diego, CA
(May 1999 to December 2003; March 2006 to present)

Senior Public Information Representative, San Diego Supercomputer Center. For the past six years, work has focused on developing, testing, evaluating, and documenting activities related to Live Interactive Virtual Explorations (LIVE). Specific tasks involve researching and implementing current technologies that support LIVE activities between science sites and remote education communities. Participate and help lead LIVE workshops for users, develop manuals, write/publish journal articles related to experiments, serve as liaison between team and Institutional Review Board for human subject evaluation efforts. Develop and implement outreach, action plans and activities to stimulate increased interest in LIVE activities among collaborators. (March 2006 to present)

Senior Science Writer, San Diego Supercomputer Center. Research focused on the creation, demonstration, and evaluation of the National Science Foundation-funded HPWREN. Thesis-related work included social impact studies of broadband connectivity upon remote field researchers and education communities. Wrote and edited journal articles, wrote and designed print materials, web sites, press releases, video scripts and other informational materials (for both peer-reviewed publications and the media). Taught courses related to HPWREN via Palomar College on Native American reservations, advised UCSD students affiliated with project, and oversaw public affairs activities - including collaborations with national institutes, development/maintenance of website, and interactions with officials at the National Science Foundation. (May 2000-December 2003)

Student Affairs, Jacobs School of Engineering. Assisted the Materials Science Program director in design, development, and delivery of programs and activities for current and prospective graduate students. Increased Fall 2000 applicants by 40 percent via recruitment activities for prospective students. Designed and implemented professional development activities, such as the formation of UCSD's chapter of Materials Research Society. Designed and maintained databases, correspondence, program/course evaluations, and reports. Developed and maintained website for program (http://matsci.ucsd.edu), wrote and edited technical documentation/proposals, coordinated prospective student visits, assisted current students with funding and professional development, and informed graduating M.S./Ph.D. students of current materials science and engineering career trends. Also served as business manager for the Jacobs School of Engineering's Electron Microscopy Facility. (May 1999-May 2000)

San Diego State University, San Diego, CA
(January 2003 to December 2005)
Communications Specialist, College of Science Field Stations Program. Worked with a web designer and database programmer to develop and implement the Real-Time Ecological Monitoring Observation Technology (REMOT) system. Created the web portal's overall navigation, content, and images.

Southwestern College, Business and Technical Studies, Chula Vista, CA
(August 1998 to January 2003)
Adjunct Faculty. Weekend and evening classes included HTML/Javascript, Internet Publishing, and Introduction to Telecommunications. In addition to classroom obligations, work included advising students and curriculum development.

University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY
(March 1996 to May 1998)
Publications and Marketing Coordinator. Developed and coordinated public relations and communication activities for the Office of Registration and Records. Maintained the office website, published the university's class schedules and general bulletin. Developed information pieces (print and electronic) and assisted supervisor with training plans and implementation, communication procedures, budgets, and policies.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory/Lockheed Martin, Oak Ridge, TN
(September 1993 to August 1994)
Public Affairs/Information Specialist. One year intern appointment via ORNL and WKU. Oversaw public affairs intern unit for Robotics and Process Systems Division, trained incoming interns on the basics of public affairs and information management. Produced black and white/full color print materials, videos, and website materials. Additional duties included project management, cost projections, news releases and technical writing, tour itineraries, audio/visual productions, conference preparation, and photographic coordination. Worked with various entities within the U.S. federal government, the defense industry, and local Anderson County school districts.

Western Kentucky University Journalism Department, Bowling Green, KY
(August 1990 to December 1991)
Computer Lab Assistant/Photojournalism Secretary. Assisted students with computer hardware and software. Distributed photo equipment to students, organized conference preparation efforts, and assisted with photograph documentaries, including Larry Powell's Hunger of the Heart: Communion at the Wall (http://www.vietvet.org/heart.htm).

Internet Consultant. Developed and edited sites (wrote HTML/Perl for pages, developed site copy, etc.) for San Diego-based web design studio (duotribe.com). Work included optiforms.com, iid.com, sandiegonorth.com, sandiegozoo.com, and metagenics.com.

January 1996 to May 1998
Freelance Writer. Monthly articles regarding Wyoming science and technology issues for the Casper (Wyoming) Star-Tribune, the University of Wyoming AlumNews, the University of Wyoming Research Magazine, Laramie (Wyoming) Daily Boomerang, and Vista: New Perspectives on the West.

May 1996 to May 1998
Public Relations Consultant. Developed public relations plans for clients such as Wyoming's Cooperative Extension Service, Environmental Health and Safety Associates, The Illustrator, and Pioneer Pharmaceuticals.

May 1988 to August 1990
Radio Announcer. Broadcast two-hour daily radio shows and developed newscasts for small Kentucky radio station (WTTL). Other tasks involved announcing for school dances, class reunions, and local sporting events.

Kinko's, Laramie, WY
(April 1995 to January 1996)
Computer Graphics Coordinator/In-Store Trainer. Oversaw computer graphics unit, which included hardware and software maintenance of ten computers, budget configurations, special events coordination, policy and procedure implementation for new employees. Additional tasks included production of black and white/full color advertisements, brochures, menus, signs, and posters. Dealt with local and statewide clients on a daily basis. Duties included project planning, cost projections, budget adherence, and detailed record keeping. Supervised, trained, and evaluated all new employees.

Southern School Media/PBS Video, Bowling Green, KY
(February to September 1993 and August 1994 to January 1995)
Designer and Copy Editor. Produced quarterly newsletter, as well as black and white print materials. Other work included project planning, budget adherence, marketing research, internet data collection, and conference preparation. Worked with a variety of clients within the educational arena of the southern United States.
